| This project is for a reversible piped-edge jacket.
You can use just about any jacket pattern, but it works best with a
cardigan-style, bolero, or roll collar pattern.
If you're not
comfortable with attaching piping, see our Basic Piped-edge pillow
project and practice the technique before you start on this jacket.
Select a solid or print fabric for the reverse side of the
jacket. Choose three or four different fabrics that coordinate well
together for your patchwork side. The amount will depend on
your size of garment and what your pattern calls for. We used
less than five yards for this medium-sized jacket.
You'll need some cording for the inside of your piping, and also
some bias strips to cover it. We used 140" each of fabric
strip and cord. This goes around the sleeve cuffs and around
the edge of the jacket.
You'll also need thread, a piping or zipper foot for your sewing
machine, and a layer of interfacing to back the patchwork side. |
 |
To make the outer jacket fabric: from your cut blocks of
fabric, sew together to make strips; mix up the order in which they
are sewn together. We used 5 squares and made 21 strips to
make our fabric. |
 |
Make your piping for the jacket edges. We used the
patterned fabric we chose for side 2 to make the piping. |
 |
To get an idea of how many strips you'll need, place a few rows
over your pattern. |
 |
We used 3 strips per pattern piece. |
 |
Sew together your strips; don't worry about making seams line up
- this is an abstract process. Back the patchwork side with
interfacing or backing when sewn together. |
| Place your patchwork fabric on top of your solid or
print fabric, then pin your pattern down and cut your pieces.
If you would like to add decorative quilting lines, now is the time
to add them. Sew the jacket pieces for both inside and outside as
per your pattern instructions. If you'd like to use appliqués
or decorative stitching on the patchwork side, now is the time to
add them. |
 |
Add piping to right side of patchwork jacket. Place the
right side of solid or patterned fabric to the right side of
patchwork fabric. Sew along the line of the piping seam
exactly. Leave an opening near the neck, then turn the jacket
right side out. |
 |
Once the jacket is turned right side out, your piped edge should
look like this sleeve cuff. |
