TERM DEFINITION
a-line Skirt shape that is fitted at the waist and extends in a gentle angle to the hem. Clothing term.
 
armscye The armhole of a garment; measurement around the top of the arm at the shoulder joint. Clothing term.
 
cap ease The difference between cap and armhole measurement. General sewing term.
 
couture 1. The business of designing, making, and selling highly fashionable, usually custom-made clothing for women. 2. Dressmakers and fashion designers considered as a group. 3. The high-fashion clothing created by designers.
 
crotch Location on pants where the legs meet; where the inseams intersect with the pants front and back. Clothing term.
 
dart A "V" shaped, tapered adjustment to a pattern to allow for more fullness in the one area or less fullness in other areas. Clothing term.
 
ease Fullness of a garment above and beyond body measurements. Wearing ease is the minimum fullness for mobility and comfort. Clothing term.
 
flounce Gathered strip of fabric applied to a skirt, usually at the hem. Clothing term.
 
godet A three cornered piece of fabric inserted into a garment to add flare or room. Clothing term.
 
gusset A square or diamond shaped piece of fabric inserted into a garment. Clothing term.
 
inseam Seam inside the leg of pants that runs from the crotch to the hem. Also, any inner seam. Clothing term.
 
princess line The style of a pattern where the bodice or skirt has been split into 2 pieces for each quarter of the body. Pattern drafting/clothing term.
 
rise Pants measurement from the crotch to the waist. Clothing term.
